Located in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, NIT Hamirpur enjoys a scenic environment and pleasant weather. Established in the year 1986, as REC Hamirpur, NIT Hamirpur has been declared as the Institute of National Importance under the Act of Parliament, 2007.
At present, NIT Hamirpur offers four years B.Tech. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Mathematics & Computing and a five years B.Arch. degree. Besides this the Institute also offers two five-year Dual Degree Programme leading to Bachelor and Master of Technology in Computer Science & Engineering and in Electronics & Communication Engineering. The Institute also offers M.Tech./M.Arch. /MSc/MBA programmes with various specializations.
In 2006, Ph.D. Programme was started in all disciplines. Since then many candidates have registered for Ph.D. in this Institute. Thus, NIT Hamirpur is making all efforts to move ahead towards the national goal of producing more and more number of quality postgraduates and doctorates, who can pursue their choice of careers in various institutions.
This Information Brochure is regarding PhD admissions of January 2025 (Full Time/Part Time) in Engineering, Architecture, Sciences, Management and Humanities.
The Institute shall admit Ph.D. candidates in following categories of Ph.D. programmes:
A. Full-Time Research Scholars
I. Fellowship Research Scholars (Category Code: FT01)
These scholars shall be eligible for financial assistance in the form of fellowship at the approved rates and guidelines as notified by MoE/other ministries of Government of India from time to time. The applicants must have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE. The sponsored/ employed candidates are not eligible to apply under FT01 category.
II. Non-Fellowship Research Scholars (Category Code: FT01-A)
These scholars will have to pursue their PhD program in self-finance mode (without any financial assistance from the Institute). Such applicants must mandatorily appear for Institute/Department level written examination as per GATE/NET Syllabus. The applicants who have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE are exempted from appearing in the written examination.
III. Externally Funded Research Scholars (Category Code: FT02)
These scholars shall receive fellowship from other agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, etc. The applicants must have qualified the National Level Test: UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET or GATE.
IV. Sponsored Research Scholars (Category Code: FT03)
These scholars shall be sponsored by Government/Semi-Government Organizations/Institutions/Industry, and they are further classified into two categories:
(a) These scholars shall be sponsored by Government/Semi-Government Organizations/Reputed Private Institutions/Industry and will be under study leave from their parent organization. Such a candidate must be sponsored by the current employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring Institutions/Organization for at least 02 years. Candidates in service are to be relieved on study leave or extraordinary leave from the Institution/Organization for Full-Time research work at NIT Hamirpur and must furnish a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from their current employer.
(b) These Research Scholars will receive financial support from foreign country through their government or awarded fellowship by the Government of India, under Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) or other such agencies/organizations for Doctoral programme. Such Research Scholars shall require approval from the Ministry of External Affairs and NOC from the MOE, and Government of India or are admitted under a MoU with such agencies.
The admission process of sponsored Doctoral Research Scholars of above two categories (a & b) would be as per the guidelines issued by the related coordinating agencies.
B. Part-Time Research Scholars
I. Institute Research Scholars (Category Code: PT01)This category refers to PhD Research Scholars who are regular employees of the Institute or who are working on various sponsored projects undertaken by the Institute from various agencies/organizations. They are expected to work for their PhD programme after fulfilling their normal duties. Candidates need to qualify an Institute/department level test.
II. Sponsored Research Scholars (Category Code: PT02)
This category comprises of PhD Research Scholars who are working professionals and are sponsored by their respective organizations. While working at their respective organizations, they can pursue the PhD work as a Research Scholar of the Institute. Such PhD Research Scholars, after completion of residential requirement (completion of course work and minimum stay of 01 Year in the Institute campus), may be allowed to join his/her parent organization, where he/she will be doing the research work while serving the parent organization and would be allowed to continue as Part Time Research Scholar. Those applicants who have their workplace within 500 kms radius of NIT Hamirpur can be exempted from the residency period and can be allowed to carry out course work in self-study mode (NPTEL/Swayam/MOOCs etc.) if recommended by the supervisor with suitable justification and approval by Dean Academic. However, for all evaluations (mid-semester examination, end-semester examination, end-semester presentation etc.) the student needs to be physically present in the NIT campus and appear for the same. Candidates need to qualify an Institute/department level test.
